from Upali Rupasinghe in New Delhi National Day was celebrated at Sri Lanka's High Commission in New Delhi on February 4 with the participation of hundred of Sri Lankans and well-wishers in India. The program started with the hoisting of the national flag by Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in India Mangala Moonasinghe. This was followed by Paritrana Desana chanted by Bhikkhus Ven. Kahawatte Siri Sumedha Thera, Acting General Secretary of the Maha Bodhi Society of India delivered the Dharmanusasana and invoked blessings of the Triple Gem on the people of Sri Lanka. Three leaders from Hindu, Christian and Muslim faiths also blessed. Mr. Moonesinghe read President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's Independence Day message. This was followed by Deputy High Commissioner reading Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's Independence Day message. Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando's Independence Day message was read by Minister Counsellor Ganegoda Arachchi. Mr. Moonesinghe stressed the necessity of a united effort by all Sri Lankans to achieve peace and harmony in the country. Members of Sri Lanka's visiting hockey team sang the national anthem while members of the Sri Lanka Army music group provided music and sang a few Sinhala songs. The celebration ended with lunch hosted by Moonesinghe and his wife Gnana. |
