by Sarath Malalasekera Lions International District 306 A has organised an all island essay competition on Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDs for schoolchildren in the age group of 15 to 19 years. This 11th annual contest will be a remarkable one as the Lions are joining hands with the Sri Lanka Anti Narcotics Association (SLANA), an established and well recognised non-governmental organisation which is in the forefront in the war against Drug Abuse, said Chief District Co-ordinator Lion S. Ramachandran MJF. As in the past the entire project is being sponsored by the Dehiwela North Lions Club. All schoolchildren in the age group of 15 to 19 years can participate in this essay competition. Topics are "Drug Abuse" destroys your future and "HIV/AIDS destroys the human race. The essay competition is opened to all three languages, Sinhala, Tamil and English. The prizes are - the winners of all three languages will get Rs. 7,500 each. First runner-up will get Rs.5,000 each and the second runner-up will get Rs. 2,500 each. Trophies and certificates too would be awarded, Mr. Ramachandran said. Conditions are - Essays should not exceed five hand written A4 size pages and not be less than four pages. (Typed scripts are also accepted). Certificate by the Principal is required in respect of the participant. Date of Birth and that the entry is the original work of the student. Decision of the panel of judges is final and no correspondence will be entertained. Scripts will not be returned. Participants can enter their essays either on one topic or both but they should be separate essays. All essays should be addressed to Chief District Co-ordinator (Prevention of drug Abuse and Aids), Lion District - 306 A, 12/3 Frances Road, Wellawatte, Colombo 6 on or before March 15, 2004. This contest is organised by the District Co-ordinator Lion S. Ramachandran under the guidance of District Governor Lion Marcella Silva MJF and it is sponsored by the Lions Club of Dehiwela North led by its President Lion S. Sekar. Sridhara of SLANA also participated at the press conference held at the Eighty Club to explain the conditions of the essay competition. |
