Nestle launches self-employment opportunity program for youth

A Youth Opportunity Program generating self-employment opportunities has been launched by Nestle Lanka Limited. According to Manager Additional Trade Channel, Nestle, Sumit Law, this program would help unemployed youth to find employment whereby the company would provide youth with a free Nescafe cycle and coffee.

Nescafe prepared in hygienic kitchens under stringent control systems will be distributed through this scheme of Nescafe Pilots," he said.

Nestle in two months of this scheme, which commenced in December has helped 50 young people to commence their own business.

With the extensions planned by Nestle for 2004 around 500 youth are expected to set up business.

Initial trials of "Real Jobs for Real People" have shown that enthusiastic entrepreneurs can make a substantial earning each month. "An example is that of Vijith Vagaarachi who gave up his job as a stores assistant to become a self-employed Nescafe pilot. In his first month he earned for himself and his family Rs. 12,500."

Law said that Nestle select enterprising youth and give them the basic marketing training. Later they are given an area to cover. The success and the demand for the program have prompted them to look at other areas of Sri Lanka. Nestle is targeting to train 500 youth by the end of this year including the North East and more regional centres would be opened.

The training program would build future entrepreneurs and leaders. "If they want to remain with Nestles they might end up as sales representatives or our regional agents. They can set up their own business and we are ready to assist them," he said.
