Mozambique's interest in Lanka's gemstones welcome Following diplomatic relations with the Republic of Mozambique recently, the High Commissioner Carlos Agostinko Do Rosario initiated a discussion to explore closer trade relations between the two countries, Gem and Jewellery Industry related matters with the Chairman of the National Gems and Jewellery Authority, T. Rusiripala, at the Head Office. Views were exchanged regarding the benefit to both countries. The High Commissioner presented a report prepared by the Mozambique Mineral Resources Development on Investment Opportunities there. The Chairman of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority stressed the importance of establishing trade relations with countries in the African Continent where, there is a very high identified resource potential for gemstones. He emphasized the importance of this relationship in the context of the vision of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to make Sri Lanka the hub of the gem and jewellery industry for the Asian Region. As we have already initiated action to improve the supply lines of gem items to Sri Lanka from all parts of the world, the interest by the Republic of Mozambique is a welcome step," he said. The meeting with the High Commissioner was followed by a further discussion with Dr. Lenardo Pantos Pimao (Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Republic of Mozambique) who was on a tour in Sri Lanka recently. The High Commissioner and the Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the Republic of Mozambique will be interested in establishing official business relations on a firm basis followed by signing a MoU between the two countries to develop the Gem Industry. |
