by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

The Sri Lanka Exhibition and Conference Services (Pte) Ltd has organised an exhibition to tap the potential market in the Maldives for professional services, school suppliers and teaching aids through the "Edu Vision" exhibition to be held from April 1-3 in Dharubaaruge, Maldives.

This will enable Sri Lanka to diversify business in to a wider area in the Maldives. Sri Lanka already has a 15 per cent market share in the field of education according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The launch of Edu Vision in the Maldives was announced by the SLECS at a press conference at the EDB Auditorium on Monday.

Lanka Exhibition and Conference Services (Pte) Ltd organised this event together with Maldives Exhibition and Conference Services (Pvt) Ltd in association with the Sri Lanka Export Development Board.

There are 6,000 opportunities to attract students for higher studies in the Maldives according to S. Rajapaksha, Director of the Foreign Ministry and the countries such as India, Malaysia and Australia are keen on getting into the market in the Maldives. Therefore a strong presentation from Sri Lanka is expected at this exhibition, she said.

Sri Lanka is considered one of the best centres in the region for higher education by the students in the Maldives for a long period.

Lectures conducted by highly qualified professional and academic staff and the high success rates achieved by students of Sri Lanka at international examinations are the two main reasons for this recognition.

Since the educational facilities available for higher education are very well developed in Sri Lanka, an effective promotional program could further attract prospective students from the Maldives, Director General EDB H. Tilakaratne said.

The exhibition will be the premier event in the Maldives, which aims to promote self-enhancement by providing a channel for student graduates and any person interested in gathering information on education careers and training opportunities.

The EDB has identified the following areas for promotion to attract more students. They are GCE O/Level and A/Level classes for London Examinations, University Degree Programs offered by local institutions affiliated to foreign universities, courses for UK Chartered and SLIM, CIM, CIMA, AAT, IT, Tourism and hospitality Human Resource Development, Degree and Diploma in Business administration and nautical and engineering studies. The exhibition will attract a vast diversity of exhibitors from educational organisations to specialised industries.

This includes establishments in the fields of IT education, hospitality finance, telecommunication and government departments as well.

The participants will get the opportunity to have one to one meetings with prospective students to project their corporate images, educate school-leavers on their best careers, conduct spot interviews, organise seminars on site and meet a wide cross section of visitors under one roof at the exhibition.

The SLECS offers a convenient package for the participants for Rs. 65,000 which includes two air tickets, accommodation for two persons for three nights four days in Maldives. The exhibition hours are from 4.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. on all three days.

Arrangements will be made in liaison with SriLankan Airlines to extend the luggage space if necessary for the stall holders by the SLECS.

SLECS has also launched a promotional campaign to attract targeted visitors through the media and outdoor promotions in the Maldives. A team would also be appointed to visit schools and academic institutions, around the Maldives to promote the exhibition, inviting students to visit the exhibition. Presentations and poster campaigns, would be part of this promotion.

The Maldives consists of 1190 islands grouped into 26 natural Atolls and divided into 20 Atolls for easy administration. Pragmatic and coherant economic policies coupled with political stability has enabled the Maldives to achieve a growth rate of about 8 per cent on average for the last two decades. Educational opportunities and educational attainment have increased in recent years.
