Java Ahmed, 22, told police he had been kidnapped by militants who told him they had tied a bomb to his waist, dropped him off in the Srinagar's main commercial center, Lal Chowk, and said they would blow him up by remote control if he moved from the spot. Police sealed off the area, sparking panic among bystanders celebrating one of Islam's holiest festivals, Eid al-Adha. Bomb disposal squad gingerly removed Ahmed's clothes and found the medicine bottle attached to his waist by many layers of bandage. "The last few hours have been the worst nightmare of my life," a shaken Ahmed said afterward. He said the militants had tied "something to my waist" and left him at the shopping area with the warning that "if I moved from the spot, they would trigger a blast." He told police he had been kidnapped by gunmen four days earlier near the northern Kashmiri town of Bandipora. Police said the kidnappers were militants who had demanded a 400,000-rupee (9,300 dollar) ransom from his parents who could not pay the amount. |
