FM sends message of condolence on Haj tragedy

Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando in a message of condolence addressed to his counterpart in Saudi Arabia Royal Highness Prince Sa'ud Al Faisal bin Abdul Azis Al Saute following the Haj Tragedy states : " I was deeply shocked and saddened to learn that a large number of persons had lost their lives and many others were injured during the Haj Pilgrimage.

I wish to extend my deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of dead in this tragedy."

Opposition included in Millennium City Committee after agitation

Opposition MPs yesterday successfully battled for opposition representation in the Parliament Select Committee to investigate the Millennium City report.

This was after Speaker Joseph Michael Perera appointed seven members -all from the UNP - to the Committee headed by Finance Minister K. N. Choksy (Chairman).

The other members are Ministers Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku, Rauf Hakeem, A. H. M. Azwer, Lal Dharmapriya Gamage and Rohitha Bogollagama.

He needs help

A.M. Ruwan Sanjeewa (17) of No. 154, Tract 13, Kalaoya, Rajanganaya is suffering form an acute heart ailment and Dr. P.A. Goonerathna, Consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, Sri Jayawardanapra Hospital has recommended urgent heart surgery to save his life.

The surgery and disposables and drugs is estimated to cost Rs. 350,000. Sanjeewa's father A.M. Chandrapala says the President's Fund has agreed to release Rs. 115,000 towards this expenditure. Since he is unable to find the balance sum required due to his present financial plight, he requests philanthropists and the general public to assist his child's cause by sending whatever financial contributions possible to expedite the surgery.

All contributions should be remitted to Account Number 207-005430-1 at the People's Bank, Saliyawewa Junction branch.
