Year One admissions : CID to investigate 318 bogus claims

by Anjana Gamage

The CID has been called in to investigate more than 318 bogus claims made by parents to obtain Year One school admissions for their children in 2004, the "Daily News" learns.

"Investigations are now being carried out by the CID. They will submit a full report after the investigations", a spokesman for the Education Ministry told the " Daily News".

The fake documents including water and electricity bills and income tax documents were detected by the Commissioner of Objections while investigating the complaints lodged by parents, who failed to gain admission for their children.

According to Education Ministry sources, the Commissioner of Objections has received 2127 complaints from 47 National schools. "But we have selected only 318 complaints. The others were not investigated. They were just only appeals made by parents," a spokesman to the Education Ministry said. More than 2,000 objections were received by the Ministry for 2003 from 71 schools and 90 cases were investigated by the Ministry.

More than 10 cases were handed over to the CID by the Ministry which had contained fake documents including false addresses, water and electricity bills and income taxes.

The Commissioner of Objections A.M.R.B. Amarakoon warned that stern legal action would be taken against those who have produced fake or forged documents for school admission and the child would also not be admitted.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry sources further stressed that according to the circular issued for year one school admission no one is allowed to donate funds when the child is being completed with all the basic qualifications to gain the admission.

However, the Education Ministry has detected recently that former Principal of Dharmapala Vidyalaya in Pannipitiya had received a sum of Rs. 30,000 to 40,000 to gain admission for two children who had met with the required qualifications.

The incident came to light after the parents of the two children produced their affidavits to the Education Ministry recently.

The Education Ministry has presented the affidavits to the Bribery Commission for further investigations.
