The chairman CEB referring to the story 'Power cuts imminent' appearing in yesterday's Daily News states the factual position is that the CEB generates electricity from both hydro and thermal sources. The total hydro storage, at present is about 325 Gwh or 325 million units of electrical energy. The amount quoted in the article is 80 million watt hours which is equal to 8,000 units. The annual electricity generated from hydro reservoirs in the year 2003 was 2,900 million units and the balance was obtained from thermal generation. The prices of electricity obtained from various countries are quoted, comparing it with Sri Lanka. This does not take into account factors such as GDP, cost of living etc. and gives a misleading picture. It is incorrect to say that the CEB is not in a position to fulfil the country's electricity requirement. The CEB has maintained electricity supply without any power cuts from May, 2002 and it will continue to do so despite the prevailing drought. It should be borne in mind that the water released from the CEB reservoirs is used for irrigation in the Mahaweli basin, as well as for consumption in large population centres such as metropolitan Colombo, Kandy, Anuradhapura, etc. the CEB with other Government agencies, carefully regulates the release of water from the reservoirs. The CEB appeals to the media to request all electricity consumers to conserve electricity which is a national resource, so that it can be better used for the economic uplift of all the people of Sri Lanka. |
