China congratulates Sri Lanka on the 56th anniversary of Independence

Her Excellency Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka

On the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the independence of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, I wish to extend, on behalf of the Chinese people and in my own name, our sincere congratulations and best wishes to Your Excellency and, through Your Excellency, to Sri Lankan people.

China and Sri Lanka are close friendly neighbours. Our peoples have close contacts and deep friendship from ancient times. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 47 years ago, our traditional friendly relations of cooperation, based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, have been constantly deepened under the care by generations of our two countries' leaders.

I am deeply convinced that through our joint efforts China-Sri Lanka friendly relations and cooperation will surely gain fresh vigour and vitality in the future.

May Your Excellency enjoy good health and happiness.
