Four Lankans killed, 2 missing in Haj tragedy - FM

It has been reported that 244 Haj Pilgrims were trampled to death when a stampede broke out on 01st February, 2004 about 10.00 a.m. on the Jamat Bridge during the Stoning of Devil Ritual, as part of their Haj performance.

Officials of the Sri Lanka Missions in Jeddah and Riyadh have rushed to the place where the bodies were kept and the injured people were treated. They also contacted all Sri Lankan Haj groups and found out that seven Sri Lankan pilgrims were missing. Further they made necessary arrangements to bury the bodies in Mina with the consent of the next of kin. The injured people are in four different hospitals in Makkah and Mina area.

The Foreign Ministry gave details of the dead and missing Sri Lankan pilgrims as-

1. Abdul Aziz Aziz Abdul Majeed - No. 16 B/1, Noordeen Lane, Sammanthurai 9, Tel. 067-2260175 (Ummul Qura).

2. Aliyar Lebbe Amir Ali - Sinna Alim Lane, Sammanthurai, Tel. 067-2260303 (Ummul Qura).

3. Mohamed Hussain - 269, Meeraniya Street, Colombo 12. Tel. 2421619 (Kara Travels).

4. Riyaz Mohamed Thahirdeen - Elamalpotha, Wahakotte, Galewela. Tel. 066-2289443 (He is resident in Makkah working as A driver for a Taxi Company. He has not joined any travel group).

Those missing were-

Zainul Abdeen - Maho (Buraq Travels), Samsudeen - Slave Island, Colombo (Buraq Travels)

The Sri Lanka Mission has opened its temporary office as a coordinating centre in Mina and their contact numbers are, 054-591645 Consul General, 053-416958 Labour Welfare Officer.
