Important milestone in quest for peace - Prime Minister

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his Independence Day message, appealed to the people to work towards peace and help create a future filled with peace and prosperity.

In his message, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said this National Day is an important milestone in our quest for peace and prosperity.

"We have come a long way in 56 years. But we could have gone further if peace prevailed. I appeal to the people to make use of this opportunity for peace. It is our collective responsibility to create peace and prosperity," he said.

The Prime Minister's message: "We are close to commemorating the second anniversary of the ceasefire agreement, though there were turbulent moments recently.

"Our people have suffered as a result of war and political insurgency for more than half of the 56 years which have elapsed after independence. They came forward to vote for peace two years ago. The ceasefire, obtained amidst much difficulty, was endangered unnecessarily recently.

"Only the people of this country can guarantee that our next independence day would be celebrated in a climate of peace and prosperity. The voices of malice and avarice should be defeated in the search for peace."
