Lasting peace possible through united effort - President

The current absence of war is a reflection of the commitment of people of all political hues to resolve the crises that have plagued us for so long. We are now engaged in dialogue with a broad spectrum of political groups to reach an understanding for a negotiated solution to the conflict. I believe that lasting peace, peace with dignity could only be achieved through the united efforts of all credible political forces and social groups, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga said in her Independence Day message.

The message: " On this our 56th Independence Day, I extend to all Sri Lankans my best wishes for your happiness and prosperity.

Let us today remember with respect and appreciation the great Sri Lankans who pioneered our Independence Movement; the men and women who rose above their religious, political, language, caste and creed affiliation; they who made huge sacrifices to realise the singular and noble vision of heralding an Independent Sri Lanka.

Let us also on this occasion remember with gratitude, the selfless service rendered by the personnel of the Armed Forces, who have made supreme sacrifices to protect the sovereignty of our land.

Perhaps this is a good time to take stock of our achievements as an independent nation.

I believe we the elected leaders of Sri Lanka should reflect on how we would be remembered by the future generations. We will be counted only if we give to our younger generation a prosperous and safe Sri Lanka to live in, while protecting our heritage.

Most of our post independent history has been blighted by ethnic strife.

The reason for this, as I have maintained at all times, is because the rights of some of our peoples were denied over the years.

The conflictual political culture of our country, which has engendered the adoption of short sighted, opportunistic policies by the major political parties, has severely impeded the forward march of our Nation.

My wish for all Sri Lankans is that we achieve true independence and build a peaceful and prosperous Nation."
