General strike call

The All Ceylon Trade Union Federation (ACTUF)is seeking the support of public and private sector trade unions for a general strike.

K.D. Lalkantha, the General Secretary of the Federation, said 35 state sector trade unions are expected to join the fast launched by the Inter Company Employees Union opposite the Labour Ministry demanding the withdrawal of the new compensation formula.Countrywide, rail workers staged mass demonstrations at major cities yesterday after the collapse of talks between the striking trade unions and a Prime Minister's delegation on Monday night.

The rail strike continues without any sign of a settlement.

The Samastha Lanka Govi Jana Sammelanaya has also decided to shift the venue of their death fast in seven districts to Colombo from next week.

The death fast by farmers demanding solutions for their problems enters its 15th day today.

Meanwhile, the Public Service United Nurses Union has also declared stern trade union action in hospitals if the circular rectifying salary anomalies of health workers issued under the signatory of Health Secretary Dr. Reggie Perera is not amended before February 10.

Meanwhile The All Ceylon Peasants Federation executive committee has decided to launch a fast unto death campaign if the Government fails to provide a positive response to the fertiliser price issue before February 5, Federation President S. K. Subasinghe told the Daily News yesterday. He said the Government has not yet found a solution to settle the fertiliser issue.

He said the federation has already handed over two letters to Finance Minister K. N. Choksy and Deputy Finance Minister Bandula Gunawardene seeking a discussion. "Both Ministers have agreed to our request. However, they have not given us a date for the discussion."

Subasinghe said the federation requests the Government to reduce the price of urea fertiliser to Rs. 500. But the Government has said it can only reduce the price of a bag of urea fertiliser by Rs. 150 which will bring down the price only to Rs. 630.

"If the Government does not take a final decision on this fertiliser price issue before Thursday, the federation will definitely call a fast unto to death campaign in Colombo.
