Lanka's tea exports achieved all-time record last year

Sri Lanka's tea exports achieved an all-time record last year with 298,273,980 kilos being exported at an FOB value of Rs 65 billion, said Bryan Baptist, Jt Managing Director of Bartleet Produce Marketing [Pvt] Ltd.,. The earlier highest figure was recorded in 2001 when 293,044,619 kilos were exported.

Akbar Brothers once again emerged as Sri Lanka's No. 1 tea exporter with a total quantity of 40,268,694 kilos.

There has been a significant increase in the export of tea in packet form compared with 2002. Last year almost 95 mln kg were exported compared to a little over 80 mln kg in 2002. However Bulk tea exports declined from 188.1 mln kg in 2002 to 176.3 mln kg in 2003,Baptist said.

In Packet Tea Exports Akbars lead with 20.3 mln kg, Jafferjee Brothers were next with 10.7 mln kg, followed by Ceylon Tea Marketing - 9.1 mln kg, Imperial Teas - 7.2 mln kg, Stassen Group - 7.0 mln kg, SKS Exports - 5.4 mln kg , MJF Group 3.5 mln kg, Expo Lanka 3.4 mln kg, James Finlays - 3.1 mln kg, Fern Tea 2.5 mln kg.

Tea Bag exports increased from 14.4 mln kg in 2002 to 15.8 mln kg in 2003.

MJF Exports are the leading Tea Bag exporters with 3.3 mln kg followed by Akbar Brothers with 2.1 mln kg. CIS and Russia, the largest market for Ceylon Tea , accounted for 72,462,016 kilos last year,2.5 million kilos more than in 2002.

With plantation wage increases being negotiated , it will be a difficult year for Plantation Companies.

The present prices are satisfactory but a major contributory factor is the severe drought that is prevailing.

The Northern hemisphere is experiencing one of the worst winters and in Russia tea consumption has moved up sharply.

Bangladesh is exporting much less due to increasing internal consumption, Baptist said.
