SMED assists small business to introduce new technology

In 1993 SMED promoted plastic coating methods for vacuum coating. Then Newton Wickramasuriya, Director at that time and Manager Environment and Industrial Engineering, Nihal Cooray, visiting India International Fair and Techmart Exhibition in New Delhi saw several electroplating and vacuum plating plants. on his return he promoted the industry.

An entrepreneur M.D.H. Jayaweera worked in the Security Section at Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and started vacuum plating.

After retirement under the voluntary retirement scheme he had worked on the vacuum plant, with the support and advice of SMED.

Vacuum deposition is an environmentally friendly plastic coating method which has wide applications. It is used for coating of automobile badges, wall clock frames, garment buttons and even precision equipment such as dentist mirror and head lamp reflector. Jayaweera's determination is to generate at least 150 direct or indirect employment opportunities. The Commercial Bank, Minuwangoda Branch helped him with the financial resources.

Friedrich Naumann Stiftung in 1989 established Small and Medium Enterprise Developers (SMED) to assist SMEs to adjust and face the challenges of the free market economy that was introduced in the seventies.

Promoting free thinking, free trade will help the SMEs in wealth creation and employment generation which in turn will influence poverty alleviation.

This is one of the main objectives of FNSt which is followed by SMED in assisting entrepreneurs such as M.D.H. Jayaweera who recently commenced operating a "Vacuum Coating Plant", which is a environmentally friendly metal deposition technique for plastic items.
