Krishan's crowning glory

Krishan Perera (16) a student of St. Joseph's College, Maradana won the first place at the final round of the Sinhala-Karaoke competition presented by the Sirasa TV recently. Krishan who is proud about himself after winning the title, came to "Lake House" from his home town Kurukulawa-Ragama to talk much about his life and achievements.

"I won the first place in the karaoke competition after participating in 50 programmes. There were about eight participants for each programme. The final round was held on January 12 and I sang the song "First of May..." a popular hit by "Bee Gees" group which helped me to win the title", he said.

The final karaoke competition was judged by a panel of well-known musicians including Bhathiya and Santhush, Corine Almeida, Ranga Dassanayake and Navaratne Gamage. The event was compered by popular singer Shanika Wanigasooriya.

Krishan who has been very keen on music from his childhood was trained in Western music by his father Cristopher Perera, who owned a calypso band and now residing in Spain.

"My father has a fair knowledge of Western music. He is the big pillar of my success. Apart from my father, uncle Damien, a former singer attached to Wildfire group gave me voice training for this contest", he said.

Krishan, who sat for his O\L examination last December is now awaiting for his results. He is a key member of the college Western Band as a Trumpet player.

"I can play the guitar and the keyboard as well. We have set up a small Western Band which consists of my cousins. At present we attend only for family parties," he said.

"The day I won the karaoke trophy along with a CD cassette, Sirasa group promised me to do my own song cassette shortly.

I would like to give my sincere gratitude to uncle Senaka Wijesundara and Christine Perumal for providing me with all the support and encouragement. However, music is only a hobby for me and I want to pursue my A\L studies in Commerce", he said.
