Isipatana in innings win over Dharmapala

by Chris Dhambarage

Isipatana continued with their impressive performance in the Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school cricket tournament with another innings victory over Dharmapala Maha Vidyalaya at Pannipitiya last week.

Isipatana have also put themselves in contention for the 'A' division league title with their third successive win in the tournament. The manner in which they completed their task was quite outstanding where they looked far more superior in both batting and bowling. They proved it once again that they have the bowling to dismiss a side out twice cheaply with Nilanchana Sankalpa leading the way.

The medium pacemen certainly played another major role in their success while capturing a matchbag of ten wickets. The Isipatana batting never looked quite enterprising but the main thing was that everyone made useful contributions which helped them rattle up over 275 runs easily.

Wesley v S. Thomas'

Wesley College took major honours in their annual fixture against S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia played for the Mahadevan Sathasivam trophy at Campbell Park. The Wesleyites certainly surprised their more fancied opponents by taking a first innings lead of 94 runs.

This was mainly due to some accurate bowling from their spinners Anura Kumara, Nuwan Samith and S. Nadaraja. As a result the Thomians collapsed to 145 runs in their first innings while chasing Wesley's modest total of 239. Anura Kumara had a good game for Wesley where he excelled with the bat too stroking a fighting half century on the opening day along with Nuwan Samith.

The only satisfaction for S. Thomas' was that they reduced their opponents to 122 for 8 in the second innings. The two new comers R. Panduwawela and S. Godwin justified their inclusion by capturing three wickets each.

St. Benedict's v Sri Jayawardenapura MV

St. Benedict's College threw away another good chance of forcing a victory as they fell short by just 20 runs from defeating Sri Jayawardenapura MV in their fixture played at Kotahena. The Benedictines were in a hurry to finish off the job and figured in four run outs as they collapsed to a dangerous 119 for 7 in their second innings.

Their task would have been much easier had they built up a good first innings lead after bundling out the visitors for 128 runs. But St. Benedict's too had to work hard for their runs and managed only 180 runs which was rather insufficient to apply pressure on their opponents. Sri Jayawardenapura MV who had nothing to prove before this game almost had the final laugh with a stunning performance during the final session of the game.

Ananda v Royal

Ananda College had to settle for a first innings win after having started as clear favourites against Royal in their inter school match played at Ananda Mawatha.

The Anandians with three outright victories under their belt and playing on their home grounds struggled to dismiss their opponents for the second time despite gaining a first innings lead of 72 runs. Pradeep Boteju put them on top with a solid 86 with other useful contributions coming from Thilina Kumarasinghe and Janudika Sriyapala. Royal batted more carefully in their second innings while frustrating the Anandians during the last two sessions.

St. Peter's v De Mazenod

St. Peter's College too were deprived of an outright win against a determined De Mazenod College outfit in their inter school match played at Bambalapitiya. The Peterites were well set to wrap up the game quite early when they compiled an imposing 287 and then reduced the opposition to 113 for 5 on the opening day.

But things looked more different on the second day with De Mazenod College putting up a spirited batting performance to surprise their more fancied opponents. The lads from Kandana not only did avoid the follow on mark but they also reduced the first innings lead to just 53 runs which was a fine effort against one of the better bowling sides in the current season.

St. Joseph's v Trinity

St. Joseph's College came out with a powerful batting display as they defeated Trinity College on the first innings in a high scoring inter school match played at Asgiriya.

The Josephians had a tough task ahead of them after the Trinitians had put up their best batting performance for the season. But Tharindu Ariyawansa and Sandun Dias made batting look much easier as both completed centuries to keep their unbeaten record intact. The two season campaigners simply took the Trinity bowling apart and added a massive 208 runs for the third wicket after they had lost a couple of early wickets.

Nalanda v St. Anthony's

Madhura Warnapura hit a splendid 109 as Nalanda had the better of St. Anthony's College in their inter school match played at Katugastota. Warnapura came into bat at a vital stage of the innings but batted with a lot of determination and helped his team reach 246 runs at the end.

The Antonians who managed only 210 in the first innings made amends with a better display in their second innings. Mohamed Rizlan and Pramodh Fernando completed half centuries as the home side reached an impressive 201 for 5. Seventeen year old Pramodh Fernando again showed a lot of promise collecting his runs in just 66 balls with two sixes and eight fours.
