Wijewickrema - National Weight Lifting coach S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent Athula Wijewickrema, one of the finest weight lifters produced by Kandy has been appointed National Weight Lifting Coach by the Ministry of Sports and the National Weight Lifting Federation. Wijewickrema who is an old Kingswoodian hails from a family which is a household name in weight lifting in Sri Lanka and the iron game runs in their blood. His father S. A. Wijewickrema Snr. was a top class weight lifter and was one time President of the Sri Lanka Weight Lifting Federation. His paternal uncle S. A. Wijewickrema Junior is the doyen of weight lifting in Sri Lanka. He was one of those who was instrumental in reviving this sport and promoting it in the villages. He was one time Director of Sports of the Central Province, President of the Sri Lanka Weight Lifting Federation for a number of years and also the National Weight lifting coach. His brother the Illustrious Asela was a champion weight lifter and has excelled both at national and international level and is now settled down in England. Wijewickrema started his weight lifting career in 1981 at the age of 13 years under the Bulgarian expert Prof. Angle Spassor and continued his career from 1981 to 2003 under the guidance of his uncle and national coach S. A. Wijewickrema Jnr. where he was selected to represent Sri Lanka at the SAF Games scheduled to be held in Pakistan. |
