Windies bounce back with 29-run victory

by Chris Dhambarage

The touring West Indies under 19 team bounced back into recognition with a morale boosting 29 run win over the Sri Lanka under 19 team in the second one day match played at the CCC grounds, Maitland Crescent yesterday.

The visitors did well to defend their modest total of 199 with a fine performance on the field and restricted the home side for only 170 in 46.3 overs. Opening bowler Lionel Baker led the way with a four wicket haul and supported well by Rishi Bachan and Lendl Simmons. This was a tremendous improvement from the West Indies team having lost the opening game by nine wickets.

The West Indies bowlers really made run making difficult for the Lankans with some tight bowling and backed up by their sharp fielding. They never let the home side get on top of the bowling and picked up wickets at regular intervals. Their only major threat was opener Damindu Kularatne and Kaushal Silva who was last out after a determined effort.

Opener Damindu Kularatne earlier hit a top score of 46 but never looked like dominating the West Indies bowling. He struck six fours and collected his runs from 89 balls. In addition the Lankans failed to build up any significant partnerships and lost wickets at regular intervals.

Earlier the West Indies failed to take advantage of a promising start and were dismissed for 199 runs from 47.3 overs. Xavier Marshall played a leading role with a run a ball 61 with two sixes and nine fours. Assad Fudaddin also completed a fifty from 83 balls with seven hits to the ropes.

After been well placed at 158 for 3 the West Indies middle order collapsed while losing their last six wickets for the addition of 41 runs. Manoj Chanka was the main destroyer with an excellent spell of bowling where he captured 5 for 46 from 9.3 overs.

The third one day match will be played on Wednesday.
