News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Four more parties join SLFP-JVP Alliance by Anura Maitipe Another four political parties formally joined the SLFP - JVP alliance at a ceremony at the BMICH yesterday. They are the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), Desha Vimukthi Janatha Peramuna (DVJP),Sri Lanka Mahajana Party(SLMP) and the National Unity Alliance(NUA). The SLFP party secretary Maithreepala Sirisena addressing the ceremony said the SLFP and JVP alliance was formed on the five basic principles, national unity, cultural revival, peace, equality neutral foreign policy. "This is a historic moment for the people of this country and another significant milestone in the country's political journey and I urge all progressive parties and people to extend their support to achieve this significant goal," he added. The JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that in Sri Lanka politics there were two categories of political parties - progressive movements and reactionary forces. "Our aim is to protect this country from reactionary forces and safeguard it for future generations and the support extended by these four parties is a great contribution toward this goal." The UNP regime has led the country to turmoil. national security is in danger. The country's economy is in shambles and entire society has been destroyed. The newly formed alliance has provided an opportunity to all progressive movements to make their contribution to safeguard the country. The leader of the NUA Ferial Ashraff said: "Today is a Haj festival day when millions of Muslims gather and pray for peace and unity. I hope it is an appropriate time to make our contribution to the task of re-unification of different communities in our motherland." SLMP Leader Ranjith Navaratne said the country has plunged into a deep crisis. "All our resources are being destroyed. This Alliance will bring fortune to the country". D.M. Podiappuhamy of the DJVP said this Alliance will try to change the present trend of selling the country to multinationals. |
