Structural engineers honour Kulasinghe

The Society of Structural Engineers - Sri Lanka recently conferred its Honorary Fellowship on Eng. Vidyajothi Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe, one of Sri Lanka's most distinguished sons, for his outstanding achievements over the past 50 years in the field of Structural Engineering.

The award was made at a ceremony which preceded the Tenth AGM of the Society held at the Colombo Hilton on December 10, 2003. The proceedings were attended by many leading Structural, Civil and Mechanical Engineers, most of whom had worked under Dr. Kulasinghe at the State Engineering Corporation, the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau or the National Engineering Research Centre.

The citation was read by Eng. Professor Priyan Dias of the University of Moratuwa and the presentation of the Honorary Fellowship was made by Eng. A.D. Wickremasinghe, Director of Buildings and President of the Society.

Eng. (Ms.) Sumi Munasinghe, Chairperson of the Bank of Ceylon, was the Guest Speaker. She referred to the achievements of Dr. Kulasinghe and said that they would continue to serve as an inspiration to practising engineers as well as those aspiring to be Engineers.

She spoke of her vision for Sri Lankan Engineers, emphasising the need for them to gain some knowledge of law, accountancy, financial planning, project report preparation and marketing so that they could develop a broader perspective and provide leadership to the task of developing the infrastructure of the country. She pointed out that an engineering background furnished an excellent foundation to acquire this knowledge with relatively little effort.

The Tenth AGM was convened thereafter and the following Structural Engineers were elected to its Executive Committee for the year 2004. -

(Ms.) K.S.A. Dayananda, Eng. D.M. Gunasekera, Eng. K.L.S. Sahabandu and Eng. R. Dissanayake.
