Gang leader, six others nabbed

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Police yesterday apprehended a seven member armed gang allegedly wanted for three murders.

The arrest was made by Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) yesterday at around 4.00am while the notorious underworld gang leader Anura alias "Anura Chuti" was with six other gangsters at Kirulapone.

It was alleged that the suspects were waiting to murder another gang leader.

According to Police, the suspects were taken into custody while they were waiting in a van and a three wheeler expecting their target. Police officers nabbed the suspects on a tip-off. Police seized a T56, a 9mm pistol and 66 rounds of ammunition from the suspects along with the van. It was alleged that their target was a close associate of "Nawala Nihal". Among the suspects were an Air Force deserter and an Army deserter, Police said.

"Anura Chuti" was on the wanted list of gang leaders.

He is alleged to be behind several murders. The main suspect had earlier served jail terms for possessing seven weapons, SI Shanta Vithana said.

OIC IP Nuwan Wedasingha and SI Shantha Vithana are investigating further on the directive of the CCD Director SSP Sarath Lugoda.
