by Anjana Gamage A survey conducted by the Education Ministry has revealed that the Western Province will account for one third of the country's population in the near future. Hence the need has risen for a better developed primary school system as a major requirement to cater to all school going children in the country in the years to come. As the Education Ministry has understood this necessity, it has decided to re-develop hundreds of schools situated in three major educational zones in the country including Kaduwela, Sri Jayawardhanepura and Avissawella", a spokesman to the Education Ministry told the " Daily News". Under the re-development project, 80 primary schools in Kaduwela and Jayawardhanepura and 68 primary schools in Avissawella will be reformed before the end of November this year. The primary school re-development project will include the Colombo city and will continue in other educational zones after the first phase of the project is being completed. Meanwhile, another project with the aim of re-developing the secondary school system in the country will also begin shortly by the ministry. Under the secondary school re-development project, 1000 schools situated throughout the country will be reformed before the end of this year. According to Education Ministry sources, the two projects will be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at a cost of Rs. 300 million. |
