by Anura Maitipe A major power cut is imminent, since only 80 Megawatts hours of electricity could be generated with the available hydropower, CEB sources told the "Daily News". The failure of North West monsoon rains in the latter part of the 2003 has aggravated the drought conditions resulting in declining water levels in the hydro reservoirs. with no immediate signs of rain the drought will continue, sources warned. Compared to other countries in the region, the unit price of electricity is much higher in Sri Lanka. The unit price of electricity in Thailand is Rs 5.62, Malaysia Rs 7.37, India Rs 7.71 and Bangladesh Rs 8.60 while in Sri Lanka the unit cost is Rs 12.30. Yet the CEB was not in a position to fulfil the country's requirement during the drought season, sources said. The annual power requirement of the country is around 7600 Mega watts. Of this nearly 4100 mw is generated from hydropower stations and the rest is supplied from diesel power stations, sources added. "Now we spent Rs 60 million per day on fuel to generate power. But if it was a coal powered plant, the same quantity of Mega watts could have been produced with Rs 32 million and it would have saved Rs 28 million per day, they said. |
