SLIIT launches National Diploma in IT For the first time in the country, the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) will conduct The National Diploma in Information Technology for students who have two passes at the G.C.E. A/L or with equivalent qualifications. This was make known at a media briefing in Colombo last week. The new course will start on February 23 at SLIIT metropolitan office in Colombo. According to Managing Director/CEO of SLIIT, Dr. Lalith Gamage, the course is designed to train professionals with hands on experience on ICT to suit present day industrial demands. The program is suitable for those aspiring to be software developers and systems administrators. SLIIT Chairman Prof S. Karunaratne said that government spends Rs. 6 billion for tertiary education and parents spend Rs. 8 billion separately", he said. The ICT course is a two-year full time program. SLIIT has also tied up with CIMA to conduct a course on Information Technology Management for CEOs. SLIIT is a leading Degree Awarding Institute in the field of Information Technology recognised by the University Grants Commission under the Universities Act. It was established in 1999 to educate and train Information Technology (IT) Professionals required by the fast growing IT Industry in Sri Lanka. The establishment of the SLIIT was spearheaded by the then Ministries of Education and Higher Education, Finance and Planning and the Ministry of Internal and International Commerce and Food. It has the largest intake of IT undergraduates per year, which amounts to approximately 1,000 students. Currently the SLIIT operates four IT campuses in Colombo, Malabe, Kandy and Kamburupitiya, offering degrees in information technology, IS and Networking. |
