'SLT iDC' to help in cost cutting measures

By Sudarshana Perera

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) expanding its business interests set up Sri Lanka's first state-of-the-art Internet Data Centre "SLT iDC" at the Telecom head-quarters in Colombo.

The new facility undertaking the county's largest outsourcing business will provide and facilitate a comprehensive range of data housing, hosting and managed services to business customers.

This was made known at a launch at the World Trade Centre in Colombo, recently. "The Internet Data Centre will serve business establishments with cost effective measures as they will be able to outsource ICT functions with SLT the Data Centre deviating from in-house data management.

"SLT took on a new dynamism in outsourcing business in Sri Lanka as this initiative will offer value added services to our clients," said the Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Telecom, Shuhei Annan.

"We will provide a 24-hour service internet data service with facilities such as web sites and services, mailing systems for retail customers", Annan said.

He said that SLT will also divert into other non-voice business strategies to increase revenue generation while bringing SLT as the dynamic establishment proving excellent voice and data management services to the entire diaspora.

According to Telecom officials, the data centre will guarantee data safety with daily backups. The data would also be kept in a completely different location to facilitate immediate data recovery from unexpected threats.

"The new data centre has become a timely venture as the provision of Data Centre Services to organisations is increasingly gaining acceptance around the world. For organisations whose main business is not Information Technology (IT), maintaining a separate data facility as a support business require additional investment. So many organisations are moving away from in-house date management facilities and are outsourcing these IT functions to dedicated Internet Data Centres. SLT's new move we are optimistic will attract more customers," Telecom officials said.
