JVP stands for mixed economy - Somawansa

JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe in an interview with the Independent Television Network on Saturday night, said the JVP stood for mixed-economy.

The United People's Freedom Alliance will mainly focus on maintaining law and order, eliminate bribery and corruption and encourage local entrepreneurs and foreign investors to a systematic and steady development of the country, he said.

All parties in the Alliance, he said, have vowed to promote the economy by strengthening both the public and the private sector.

"With the implementation of this process, they would be able to create a conducive atmosphere where all communities could live in peace and harmony," Somawansa added.

Asked that there was speculation that investors would not help the alliance, Amarasinghe wanted to know if a single institution had come forward up to date saying they would not invest under an Alliance Government.

"On the other hand, many investors left Sri Lanka because Government Ministers were demanding commissions.

We will reveal the list of these Ministers in due course," Somawansa said. Asked if there was a secret pact between the JVP and the SLFP as said by some, he said. "Everybody knows about the pact signed between the SLFP and the JVP.

It was published in the media. Unlike the UNP we are not used to that kind of cheap tactics".

The UNP leadership has failed to disclose the agreement between the UNP and the LTTE.

The Government has failed to keep the President informed about the pact. Even the Cabinet was kept in the dark, Somawansa said.

When told that some express fear that the SLFP would gradually face liquidation by the JVP due to the Alliance, he said the UNP was trying to create the liquidation phobia among the JVP and SLFP.

"Why is the UNP so worried about our parties. In fact what they like to see is the liquidation of both parties," he said.

Asked about the solution offered by the JVP to the North-East issue, Somawansa said the peace process was inoperative since April last year and the only solution what the Alliance would offer to the Tamil Issue was democracy and equality.
