Samurdhi Movement joins hands with private sector courier company

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The Samurdhi Movement for the first time has joined hands with ACX Private Ltd, a leading private sector courier company in Sri Lanka and formed a joint venture company named ACX Samurdhi Private Ltd.

Under the public and private sector partnership program, the Sri Lanka Samurdhi Authority (SLSA) has made arrangements to commence joint ventures in collaboration with leading private sector companies to generate employment opportunities to youth of Samurdhi beneficiary families, Samurdhi Director General Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne told the Daily News.

The Samurdhi Movement has created an effective network of 1,037 Samurdhi Banks with a total of a 26,000 employment base.

However, the private sector is efficient in management, marketing and other areas. Therefore, the SLSA has formulated plans to start several joint venture projects with the private sector, he said.

"ACX courier is 100 per cent owned by a Sri Lankan company which operates over 15 years in the local and international courier field.

ACX is the official courier for several Government institutions including the Tourist Board, National Chamber of Commerce, Cricket Board, People's Bank and Ministries. In addition ACX handles the entire mail operations of the Central Bank."

Under the ACX Samurdhi Private Ltd, 51 per cent shares of the company belongs to ACX courier and 49 per cent shares to the SLSA, Dr. Navaratne said.

The company has selected 18 youth from Samurdhi beneficiary families as new employees to expand the company's activities. The company has assured a guarantee to customers to deliver a letter or parcel within 48 hours from any part of the country.

Twenty five new motorcycles and three vans have been deployed to strengthen the company's activities. Nearly 100 jobs are to be given to youth through this endeavour, he said.

The Samurdhi Movement's intention is to form nearly 100 joint venture projects in collaboration with the private sector within the next three years.

Collaborative efforts with the private sector is the only viable solution which will assist the Samurdhi Movement to overcome unemployment problem among low income families and uplift their socio-economic conditions, he added.

The company's inauguration ceremony was held in Colombo recently with the participation of Agriculture, Livestock and Samurdhi Minister, S. B. Dissanayake and Samurdhi Minister R. A. D. Sirisena.
