Bail for five suspects by Indika Polkotuwa and Asela Kuruluwansa Of the nine suspects in the Rs. 100 million fraud case in the Central Province Education Department, five were ordered to be enlarged on bail by Kandy Chief Magistrate Leon Seneviratne, yesterday. The Magistrate who allowed bail in a sum of Rs. 100,000 in cash and Rs.one million in personal bail in respect of each suspect, ordered them to report to the CID office, Colombo on the last Sunday of every month and suspended their passports which were taken into Court custody. Former Chief Account Ananda Weerasinghe, former Deputy Director Ananda Munasinghe, former Teacher Instructors N. S. Warakamulla, H. M. Jayantha Abeyratne and M. I. K. Bibile were the five suspects so released yesterday. Former Additional Director of Education Dingiri Banda Eldeniya and Teacher Instructor A.M. Ratnayake had already been enlarged on bail on medical grounds on a previous occasion. The remaining two suspects, former Education Director N.R.C. Gunawardena and W.M. Ekanayake were further remanded till February 11. All suspects were warned to be present in Court on February 11. A team of lawyers led by President's Counsel Wijaya Wickremaratne appeared for the suspects. |
