by Anura Maitipe Most houses damaged in last year's Southern floods have already been re-constructed through the Rs. 104.5 million grant from the President's Fund, Southern Province Governor Kingsley T. Wickremaratne told the Daily News. "This was the biggest destruction caused by a flood in the recent past. Over 100 people died and 3,750 houses were destroyed. Nearly 69,500 families were rendered homeless in Hiniduma, Lankagama, Neluwa, Mapalagama and Morawaka," he said. These funds were authorised by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga during her visit to the area during the floods to expedite rehabilitation and reconstruction to bring normality to the lives of people in flood-hit areas. Chief incumbent of the Habarakada Pirivena, Ven. Habarakada Indrarathana Thera said the floods caused severe damage to the temple and two buildings were completely destroyed. "It is regrettable that the Buddha Sasana Ministry did not even inquire about the damage caused to the temples in the area. "Neither the Minister nor Ministry officials were seen at the time of the floods. I thank the President for allocating monies from the President's Fund to renovate temples in the flood affected areas," he said. "The re-construction of the Lankagama Junior School in a very remote area has been undertaken by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL)," the Thera said. |
