by Anura Maitipe Foreign funding agencies have allocated Rs 4201 million to implement rural development projects in Kandy,Baddulla, Anuradhapura, Ratnapura, Moneragala Kegalle, Ampara and the Matale districts, the provincial authorities told the Daily News. These funds have been utilised to develop less developed areas in these districts and to provide drinking water, electricity and irrigation facilities for agricultural purposes. Theses funds have also been utilised for rehabilitation of road ways, medium and large scale water tanks and canals.The rural integrated project which had been implemented with the assistance of the AFDA at a cost of Rs. 1343 million has been completed in Badulla. The poverty alleviation project in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa will help to develop 600 rural villages in these two districts. The German funding agency GTZ has launched a strategic support programme at a cost of Rs. 480 million to enhance the livelihood of the people in the Kandy district. The Japanese Government has launched an integrated rural development program at a cost of Rs228 million to develop rural areas in Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Moneragela, Kegalle, Ampara and Ratnapura. The World Bank has initiated a project at a cost of Rs 995 million to increase the irrigated land area in the Matale district. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) initiated development program at a cost of Rs.955 million to develop irrigation and Inland fisheries, Electrification of rural areas, credit facilities for target groups and waste disposal. |
