Sri Lanka-Nepal to share agricultural know-how From Ritu Raj Subedi Our Correspondent in Katmandu Sri Lanka and Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last week in Katmandu to share research information and technology in a bid to develop the agricultural sectors in both countries. The two countries will exchange research information, research personnel and scientists, agricultural technology, high-brid varieties of seeds and breeding materials, scientific articles, agricultural methodology and other related matters, said Bholaman Basnet, a senior official of the Nepal Agriculture Research Council (NARC). The NARC will work closely with its Sri Lankan counterpart - Sri Lanka Council for Agricultural Research in implementing the agenda of the proposed action plan. Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Dhanasena Hettiarachchi signed the Mou on behalf of Sri Lanka while NARC Director Raghunath Sapkota signed on behalf of Nepal. Basnet said that Sri Lanka could benefit from Nepal's experience in the field of vegetable farming while Nepal share technology from Sri Lanka's tea, coconut and arecanut farming. He said that there is high potential of commercial relation of agro-products in both countries and this project would help tap such potentials in the future. We will find conducive areas of cooperation where we can implement this project first, he said, Participants from both sides agreed to come up with a work plan. As per corresponding programs and interest of the two sides, scientific goods will be exchanged on recommendation of a scientific and technical committee. This includes exchange of scientists, technology experts and scholarship for scientists and students. |
