Schools football promoter Rodrigo passes away

The death occurred of Stanley Rodrigo, former teacher and schools football promoter after a brief illness aged 73 at the time of his demise.

Rodrigo first started his teaching career at his old school St. Benedict's College, Kotahena before moving on to St. Joseph's College, Grandpass and finally ending his chequered career at St. Anthony's College, Wattala.

During his teaching stint he produced many brilliant students who are holding top positions in every walk of life.

He was a teacher who believed that while learning is essential, he would also stress on his students that one has to have a healthy mind in a healthy body.

He believed that sports maketh a complete man. And in this endeavour he took to the promotion of football in the schools he taught as Secretary and Master-in-Charge and turned out some wonderful players, some of who went on to sport national colours.

Rodrigo was an artist with the cue with billiards being his forte. Many were the trophies and titles he won playing for the Old Bens and KCYMA.

His demise will be a great loss in the promotion of schools football, .

Rodrigo leaves his wife Haycinth and children Roshan, Rohan, Rozanie, Marina and Ramesh.

His funeral will take place on Thursday from 189, Vidyalaya Mawatha (formerly Barber Street), Kotahena, Colombo 13 at 4.30 p.m. to General Cemetery, Kanatte. - (E.R.)
