Youth sports festival in March Maharagama special correspondent, Vehelle Piyathilake The National Youth Sports Festival 2003 postponed due to lack of funds of the National Youth Services Council is scheduled to be held in the 3rd week of March 2004 said the Chairman and the Director General of the NYSC Sunil Jayantha Navaratne. 325 Divisional and Secretariat level sports competitions are already completed and the national level team games competitions are to be held from February 24 to March 4 at Youth Centre Grounds, Maharagama. There are 40 sports events included in the Youth Sports Festival and it is said that this is the biggest sports festival to be held in the island. Nearly one lakh sportsmen and sportswomen participate in the festival from the Provincial Secretariat divisions level to the national level and more than 1,000 sportsmen and sportswomen take part in the finals. The schedule of the national level competitions of the team games are as follows: February 24th and 25th - Football, February 26th - Volleyball (men and women), 27th - Netball (men and women), 28th - Elle (women), 29th - Elle (men), March 1st and 2nd - Softball cricket (men), March 3rd - Softball cricket (women), March 4th - Cabadi (men and women). All the team events will be held at the National Youth Service Grounds, Maharagama. The grand awards presentation ceremony will be held in the 3rd week of March at the Sports Ministry Grounds under the patronage of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jonstan Fernando. |
