Thomians, Royalists trounced, Petes bounce back

by Chris Dhambarage

Isipatana created the biggest upset in the Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school cricket tournament when they defeated S. Thomas' College by an innings at Havelock Park last week.

Their success had great significance because this was the first ever win for Isipatana in an inter school first eleven match against the Thomians. This game was revived after a lapse of few years and Isipatana grabbed the opportunity to prove their capabilities with a tremendous all round performance.

They have been somewhat unfortunate this season where they have come closer of winning on more than a couple of occasions. The previous week too they missed out a good chance where they ran out of overs in an attempt to dismiss D. Senanayake College for the second time having enforced the follow on.

But this time everything went in favour of them as they completed their task with plenty of overs to spare. Their batting clicked well at the correct time with an impressive performance as they piled up 278 in their first innings. The Isipatana bowlers too stuck to their task getting rid of the strong Thomian batting line up for only 141 runs. Tharaka Waduge had a memorable game for Isipatana claiming a matchbag of eight wickets.

Prince of Wales v S. Thomas'

The Thomians were at the receiving end for the second time this weekend when they were beaten at the hands of Prince of Wales College by ten wickets on their home grounds at Mount Lavinia. The Cambrians really proved too strong in both batting and bowling as they completed a memorable win after a lapse of twenty years.

Prince of Wales took control of the game from the start and bowled out their opponents for just 91 runs in the first innings. The two spinners Kavinda Silva and Srimal Peiris caused the damage sharing nine wickets between them. The Thomians almost doubled that score in the second innings but still could not escape defeat against a determined Cambrian outfit. Sanjeewa Mendis's knock of 67 was the only bright spot for the Thomians as they collapsed to 165 in their second innings.

St. Joseph's v Royal

Meanwhile St. Joseph's College delivered a stunning blow as they brought down Royal College by an innings in their inter school match at Reid Avenue. The Josephians could be really pleased with their performances because they have beaten Royal after a lapse of seven years.

This was also the second time that they have beaten a top team this year having earlier outplayed St. Benedict's College at Kotahena. The two matchwinners for St. Joseph's were Sandun Dias and Christopher Fleming who ended up with a matchbag of ten wickets. The left arm pacemen destroyed the Royal batting in both innings through some hostile bowling while Sandun Dias hit a magnificent 147 in their first innings.

St. Peter's v Nalanda

St. Peter's College bounced back into recognition with a fantastic nine wicket win over Nalanda College in their inter school match played at Bambalapitiya. The Peterites certainly were on top throughout the game and looked more superior in all departments of the game. But at one stage it felt as if they had batted too long when they continued to occupy the crease even during the second morning.

The idea of course was to give Shanaka Wickremasekera more time to complete his century after he had remained unbeaten on 93 at the end of the first day. The Peterite bowlers then came into their own with some tight bowling with Shehan Wijethunga leading the way. The right arm paceman who was spearheading their attack in the absence of Umhar Samsudeen, made life difficult to the Nalandians as he ripped through the batting in both innings.

Ananda v Mahinda

Meanwhile Ananda recorded their third innings win for the season defeating Mahinda College, Galle by an innings and 17 runs in their inter-school cricket encounter played at Ananda Mawatha. The Anandians stuck to their basics as they bowled with a lot of discipline and then batted sensibly to complete a convincing victory at the end.

The Anandians managed to score only 229 runs in their first innings but that modest total was made to look a solid one because of some accurate bowling. Charith Jayaweera had an outstanding game capturing three wickets and followed up with a four wicket haul in the second innings. He received good support from Ranawaka, Sachithra Senanayake and Ranasinghe.

St. Benedict's v St. Anthony's

St. Benedict's College had another satisfying outing as they took major honours in their inter school match against St. Anthony's College Katugastota and played at Kotahena. Incidentally the Benedictines were just three wickets away from pulling off an outright win as they reduced the opposition to 112 for 7 in the second innings. The Antonians were set a victory target of 229 runs off 46 overs but they never looked lime making it losing wickets at regular intervals.

St. Benedict's enjoyed a good first innings lead of 82 runs after they had dismissed the visitors for only 128 runs. The pace spin combination of Tharindu Heshan and Eranga Karunaratne mesmerised the Antonian batting line up with some splendid bowling. Earlier Suranga Illangange continued his excellent form with the bat scoring another half century and followed up with a solid knock of 42 in the second innings.

Wesley v Kingswood

Kingswood College scored an easy first innings win over Wesley College in their inter school match played for the P. H. Nonis trophy at Peradeniya. The Kingswoodians were in control of the game from the moment they piled up that massive first innings total of 310 for 9. Their innings was built around a superb century from Indika Senaratne who went on to make 141 with five sixes and 18 fours.

The Wesleyites were forced to follow on despite a fighting knock of 40 from A. Katepearachchi. In the second innings it was N. Samith who saved them with another defiant innings which helped them reach a more respectable 115 for 4.

Zahira v Rajasinghe MV

A fine spell of spin bowling by M. Irshad who had a match bag of 14 for 67 helped Zahira College beat Rajasinghe MV by an innings and 135 runs in their inter school cricket match played at Maradana. Irshad had a seven wicket haul in each innings as Rajasinghe MV were dismissed for 144 and 83 in their two innings respectively.

Trinity v Vidyartha

Trinity College scored a good first innings win over Vidyartha College in their inter school cricket tournament match played at the Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy. Chasing a modest score of 183, Vidyartha College were dismissed for 164 with Mufthi Muneer 3 for 50 and Madhuranga Munaweera 3 for 5 doing the damage.

In the second innings Trinity reached 110 for 3 with Hasantha Mendis stroking an unbeaten 51. Thilina Kumarasinghe (63) and Mahela Udawatte (50) completed half centuries as Ananda College scored a first innings win over Wesley College in their inter school cricket tournament match at Campbell Park. The Anandians overtook their opponents first innings total quite convincingly with Kumarasinghe and Udawatte doing the bulk of the scoring.

President's College v Raddoluwa MV

A fine knock of 91 from S. Kumarapperuma helped President's College Rajagiriya beat Raddoluwa MV on the first innings in their Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school cricket tournament match played at Raddoluwa. Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa cruised to an easy first innings win over Revatha MV in their inter school cricket tournament match played at Wennappuwa. Meanwhile De Mazenod College scored a first innings win over Gurukula MV in their inter school cricket tournament match played at Kandana.
