Kashmiri rebel with explosives arrested in New Delhi NEW DELHI, Friday (AFP) Indian police have arrested a suspected Kashmiri militant in New Delhi with a cache of explosives days ahead of the country's Republic Day celebrations, a report said Friday. The militant, believed to belong to the Hizb-e-Islami group, was captured late Thursday with 3.5 kilograms (7.7 pounds) of explosives, the Press Trust of India news agency said. Police were questioning the man who was allegedly planning to launch an attack in the capital to disturb the celebrations Monday marking India's 55th anniversary as a republic, the agency quoted joint police commissioner Karnal Singh as saying. Security has been stepped up ahead of Republic Day, which is marked with a parade in the heart of New Delhi showcasing military hardware and folk dances by children and is viewed by the president, prime minister and other guests. |
