TULF leader appeals President, Premier to join hands

TULF Leader V. Anandasangaree has urged President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to join hands to resolve the ethnic crisis.

In a letter to the President, the TULF leader has requested that Norway who is here as facilitator at the invitation of the President should be retained.

The letter notes: "Like many others in this country I am also deeply concerned about the peace process that is at stake and earnestly appeal to you to see that the peace talk go on irrespective of your forming an alliance with the JVP which is entirely your party matter about which I have no right to comment."

"It is on Your Excellency's invitation that the Norwegian came to Sri Lanka and acted as facilitators in the Peace Process. They worked hard against several odds.

They had suffered humiliation and embarassment while engaged in the Peace Process. Eric Solheim was attacked in a degrading manner in the last Parliament when he was seated in the Speaker's Gallery. It was I, who apologised to him when my turn came to speak in the House."

It is strongly rumoured and someone had even said that Norway will be left out of the Peace Process. I strongly urge that the services of the Norwegian should not be dispensed with under any circumstances. Instead please invite them with honour to continue their efforts.

The other matter is with regard to the parties for the negotiations. As far as the Tamils are concerned the Government should hold talks only with the LTTE and not simultaneously with any other Tamil Group.

I am aware that no peace can be found without the participation of the LTTE and what is acceptable to the LTTE will be acceptable to the Tamils. The Muslims should be given their due place in the negotiations. These are my personal views".
