SLFP scoffs at Ranil's statement

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party yesterday scoffed at Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's statement that the SLFP and the JVP agreement contained contradictory views.

Opposition Chief Whip Mangala Samaraweera in a statement said the agreement was a transparent document signed at a grand ceremony made open to the country and the world.

"Copies of the agreement were made available in all three languages to the people and the media", Samaraweera added.

He pointed out that even the foreign missions were given copies and the only document that was needed to be publicised was the Constitution of the United Lanka Freedom Alliance (ULFA).

"Once the Alliance is registered as a political party we will make the constitution available", he noted.

He claimed that the two year rule of the United National Front government badly affected the economy and culture and even went to the extent of carving out a separate State.

Samaraweera pointed out that the historic SLFP-JVP agreement undermined the facist agreement of the UNF to resolve the ethnic crisis and therefore the SLFP-JVP agreement defeated the facist attitude of the UNF government.

"We don't have secret agreements like the UNF-LTTE agreements", the former Minister noted. The Chief Opposition Whip mentioned that the SLFP-JVP agreement was an outcome of a ten month old dialogue.

He accused that Ranil Wickremesinghe implemented an economic policy to help his "mango friends" and it resulted in erosion of the nation's economy and culture.

He appealed to the public not to be misled by the statements of the UNP leader.
