Bhikkhus endorse 'Suriya Arana'

by Anjana Gamage

An exclusive audience of leading Buddhists monks in the country who viewed the movie Suriya Arana on January 20 agreed that the contents of the film did not harm Buddhism, the film's producer Renuka Balasooriya told the Daily News.

International award winning film director Somaratne Dissanayake's latest production Suriya Arana which drew criticism in local Buddhist circles had to be screened to a special audience of leading Buddhist monks - a first in the Sinhala cinema history.

The chief incumbents of the three chapters- Malwatte, Asgiri and Amarapura along with prominent Buddhist monks including Ven. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera, Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thera, Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera, Ven. Uduwe Dammaloka Thera and Ven. Kollonnawe Sri Sumangala thera and several other Buddhist monks were invited by the producer for the special screening.

According to Balasooriya, Ven. Rathana Thera of Jathika Sangha Sammelanaya had observed that Suriya Arana was a creation where respect was accorded to Buddhist monks unlike some other film productions which were critical of the members of the Sangha.

Ven. Uduwe Dammaloka Thera has said that the Samanera character depicted in the film would inspire love and honour for all Buddhist monks.

"Therefore we should give our blessings and a special award to the director of this film," the Thera had said.

Meanwhile the Public Performances Board which viewed the movie the same day had approved the certificate and the film was released for public screening from yesterday.
