President has authority to take over any portfolio, says J Biz chief

Joint Business Forum Chairman Mahendra Amarasuriya who is the J-Biz chairman stated that his forum was not happy with the manner in which tax exemptions were granted and that he had the opportunity to talk with lawyers of both parties on the issue of the President taking over three portfolios under her wing recently.

He made this remark when he was interviewed by Chartered Accountant Nihal Sri Amarasekera in the English program 'Eye-opener' telecast over 'Eye' channel of Rupavahini on Thursday from 9.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m.

He said the President had given a free hand to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to negotiate peace with the LTTE.

"The peace process was not fruitful in my opinion," he said.

"According to the provisions of the Constitution, the President has authority to take over any portfolio under her command. We are not concerned as to who wields power. What we want is a stable Government.

"We can forge ahead with our enterprises only when stability is guaranteed," he added.
