A river of talent flows on to small screen :

Nadee steals the limelight

Nowadays, it seems rather difficult to get an interview from Nadee Chandrasekera. Not that she is proud or arrogant. But her schedule is very busy as she has got invitations to act in a number of a new teledramas.

An emerging actress, Nadee as she is fondly known in the teledrama field, came to the limelight in the past few weeks by winning two consecutive awards for her contribution to the popular teledrama "Asani Wesi" telecast over the small screen.

She won the best upcoming actress award at the Sumathi Tele Awards - 2003 and best actress award at the SIGNIS award festival.

"I never expected awards, but I am happy that I was able to win such two prominent awards within a very short period," Nadee says.

The unique feature behind Nadee's success is that she was able to win these awards in her first teledrama presented to the competition.

"This is really a great achievement for me and those who supported my artistic career over the years," she said, expressing her satisfaction while extending her gratitude to everyone who assisted and encouraged her.

Like many artistes, Nadee shaped up her skills and talents on the school stage. "From school days, I have shown a keen interest for acting, dancing and singing. I proved my talent in school dramas and that experience helped me to come this journey in the drama field," she noted.

So far, she has appeared in 20 teledramas. Only three of them have been telecast, propelling her to stardom in the teledrama field. She has also acted in three films - Ira Mediyama by acclaimed film director Prasanna Vithanage, Sonduru Dadabima by Anura Horatious and Punchi Suranganavi by Somaratne Dissanayake.

After leaving school, Nadee got a unique opportunity to improve her talents by attending a course conducted by the veteran actress Anoja Weerasinghe. "That course greatly inspired me. Rising to popularity is not an easy task. I am happy that I was able to become popular within a short period. But I had to undertake a very difficult journey. It was not a path strewn with flowers. There were setbacks and difficult moments - I have wept silently in my heart in such instances which worried me. My mother and family was always behind me to encourage me."

Despite all these predicaments, Nadee is determined to remain in the performing arts and contribute to better teledrama and cinema. "I want to portray good characters," she added.

Nadee prefers to perform different characters.

"Nowadays, I am acting in a teledrama directed by Bermin Lyli Fernando where I play a detective. It is a novel experience," she added.

Apart from her acting career, Nadee has some other plans too. She wants to become a lawyer. "I have sat for the law entrance examination and I am expecting results. My hope is to pursue higher studies," she added.

German Film Festival

In a series of "Heimat" films, the Goethe Institute will be presenting the most vivid and colourful first generation popular German movies of the post war era.

To those living in the hub of activity of fast developing cities, the German village with its green meadows, snowy Alps, deep blue lakes, pine forests provided an idyll that was untouched by the wars.

These celluloid love stories often show the fun-loving boy from the city falling in love with the pure simple village lass - or the sophisticated lady from the city finding it difficult to ignore the good hearted lumberjack. The films not only capture the beautiful scenery of Bavarian Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but also reveal panorama of traditional festivals and colourful dances.

Sri Lankan audiences, too, would no doubt be reminded of similar films of the sixties and early seventies that portrayed the village as the sanctuary of tradition, where simple villagers live in harmony with nature.

A tip not only to nostalgic lovers of the sixties but to any one who would like to be carried off by a love story related in the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes, music and songs thereby becoming almost forerunners of "Sound of Music"!
