B'deshi author Nasreen's effigies burnt

CALCUTTA, India, Wednesday (AFP) More than 250 Muslim protesters burned effigies of exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen and demanded her expulsion from India.

The protest follows the issuing of a "fatwa", or Islamic decree, against the 41-year-old author for allegedly denigrating Islam in the third installment of her biography.

Chief cleric of the Tipu Sultan Mosque, Noorur Rahman Barkati, has already offered 20,000 rupees (425 dollars) for anyone who blackens Nasreen's face with shoe polish or soot, a grave insult in India.
