Colts out to avenge defeat

by Chris Dhambarage

Bloomfield Cricket & Athletic Club and Colts Cricket Club will revive their rivalry for the second time this season when they clash in the Premier division one limited overs cricket tournament final at the R. Premadasa Stadium under lights today.

The two teams met in the Premier League division one final in December and Bloomfield clinched the title with an outright win at the SSC grounds.

But this time Colts CC will be out to avenge that defeat with an improved performance having outclassed Sebastianites SC in last week's semifinal played at this same venue. In contrast Bloomfield went through some real anxious moments before overcoming NCC by five runs in their semifinal fixture.

Colts CC are likely to field the same team that played in the semifinal and are brimming with confidence with some outstanding contributions in the last few outings. Their openers Romesh Kaluwitharana and Shantha Kalawitigoda are in tremendous form having figured in a century partnership in their ten wicket win over Sebastianites SC last week.

The former has been among the runs in the inter provincial tournament too, and will be hoping to continue with that excellent form.

Bloomfield are likely to include Dharshana Gamage into their side after the paceman missed out the semifinal against NCC due to an injury last week. In addition they will also have the services of Sri Lanka 'A' players batsmen Saman Jayantha and Thilina Kandambi and dynamic all rounder Farveez Maharoof.

Bloomfield's main concern will be on their bowling department after having really struggled to contain the NCC tailenders in the semifinal fixture. Their bowlers were put to the sword by the NCC last pair before occasional spinner Tillekeratne Dilshan came into their rescue with a surprise four wicket haul.

This time Bloomfield will be up against some of the better stroke makers like Kaluwitharana, Sajith Fernando, Dulip Samaraweera and Shantha Kalawitigoda.

In addition all-rounder Chaminda Vaas with a century to his credit in the inter provincial tournament will certainly add more strength into their lower order batting department.

Bloomfield will depend a lot on their top order comprising Jayasuriya, Tillekeratne Dilshan, Ian Daniel and Indika de Saram.

The champions will receive a cash award of Rs. 300,000 and the runners-up will receive a cash award of Rs. 200,000. In addition the man of the match will receive a cash award of Rs. 25,000. The teams:
