Duleep Mendis is new CEO by Sa'adi Thawfeeq Sri Lanka Cricket appointed former captain Duleep Mendis as its new Chief Executive Officer at an Executive Committee meeting held at SLC headquarters yesterday. Mendis succeeds another former Sri Lanka captain Anura Tennekoon, who retired from the post in December. Following Tennekoon's retirement, Mendis was appointed by SLC as acting CEO until such time a suitable person was found to fill the vacated post. A private advertising company was given the task of finding a suitable successor to Tennekoon. But they were unable to fulfil the task. Prior to his new appointment Mendis was the SLC's director of development. He becomes the third person to be appointed to the post after Dhammika Ranatunga and Tennekoon. Mendis (51) held many positions at SLC after retiring from the game in the early nineties. He performed the task of chairman of selectors, manager, coach, cricket consultant and served in many other administrative capacities. Mendis was manager of the national team when they won the World Cup in 1996 and last year was interim coach for a short period until SLC found a successor to Dav Whatmore. A dashing batsman in his own right, Mendis played in 24 Tests for his country scoring 1329 runs (avg. 31.64) with four centuries and eight fifties. He also appeared in 79 one-day internationals scoring 1527 runs (avg. 23.49) with a top score of 80. As captain he led his country to maiden Test victories over India and Pakistan and also captained in two World Cup tournaments in 1983 and 1987. |
