Open letter from NUA to SLMC leader

"It is with utter shock, dismay and regret I write this open letter to you after reported abandoning of your legitimate right as SLMC chief to pursue unilateral withdrawal of LTTE from the MoU you signed with the LTTE chief, states NUA spokesman M.M. Abdul Kalam.

You as SLMC chief on 13/4/2002 signed this and declared to the SLMC rank and file and the whole nation that you have signed a historical document to protect the North-East Muslim community. Thereafter on every possible public forum you and the SLMC high command gladly claimed it to be a milestone in your political career.

Unfortunately, after the eruption of repeated anti-Muslim violence obviously orchestrated by the LTTE in Muttur and Valaichenai you realized that the MoU with the LTTE was not worth its paper and it was a trap of the LTTE to the SLMC, Incidentally, your numerous efforts to meet or to contact the LTTE chief thereafter yielded no results so far although 22 months have now lapsed after your one and only meeting with him.

Still you have been defending this MoU and made the Muslims to believe your folly even after the LTTE had unceremoniously disowned it one month ago.

At one stage after signing this MoU, the LTTE had declared that the SLMC is not the sole representative of the Muslims and by your silence you correctly admitted it and endorsed that the LTTE is the sole representative of the Tamils.

The LTTE not only failed and neglected to honour the terms of the MoU when it was in force but also disregarded common courtesy of protocol by getting its 2nd leader to make its announcement of withdrawal from the MoU.

The SLMC rank and file are sad to see the respect the SLMC chief commands from the LTTE. Soon after the said announcement you vowed to protest and made a big hue and cry to write to the LTTE chief and to take it up with the facilitator-Norwegians.

After a lapse of one month when you were questioned by the media at a press conference you have reportedly said that you had no intention of writing to the LTTE as you promised a month ago and had virtually abandoned the issue by merely condemning it and saying that it was the LTTE's trick. Is it an unqualified admission of your ignorance or foulplay?

By your commission of signing this MoU on 13/04/2002 with the LTTE chief you made a wrong political move and now by your omission of giving up this issue you have made a serious political blunder.

In fact you as SLMC chief have a legitimate right to take this issue not only with the LTTE but also in many other international fora if your claim that the said MoU was a sacred document is correct. But from your omission now we have to come to the following conclusions.

* You have abandoned your legitimate political right to fight on this MoU because you are either afraid of them or not capable of confronting them even in a democratic way.

* All are aware that we can't match the LTTE's fire power, Now you have proved that you can't match their political power as well.

* The LTTE has not taken you as SLMC chief seriously. This may be because you are not serious and sincere on the security problems of the North-East Muslims.

By this grave and irreparable omission you have also created a bad precedent in the history of Muslim politics that any party or leader could enter into any MoU with the SLMC and its chief on any issue at any time and go back from it any time, under any circumstances and the Muslims or the SLMC will not bother it.

Just imagine a vice versa situation. What would have been the plight of the SLMC in that event? The LTTE would have taken the SLMC to task nationally and internationally and exploited the situation to their best interest.

As you are aware the LTTE is the other party in this bilateral peace talks. By simply giving up this serious issue you have lost a political battle with one party to the talks. It is well known fact that you have not made any tangible success in this peace talks with the government either - the other party to the talks.

So the net result is that you have lost your political battle with the two parties to the peace talks and still struggling to present your alternate proposals to the proposals of both parties even after your much publicized deadline by giving some lame excuses.

Then how can the Muslim community depend on you that you will fight to the hilt with the LTTE and the government to win our lost rights?

The SLMC rank and file and the Muslim community need sincere and serious response from you as the SLMC chief for these questions ASAP please."
