Aim of Alliance:

Reaffirmation of social democracy: Mangala

Chief Opposition Whip Mangala Samaraweera borrowing a phrase from Anthony Gidans' book The Third Way said: "The SLFP-JVP MoU will be a reaffirmation of the radical centre of Sri Lankan politics.

At a time Sri Lanka is politically dragged into the extreme right by the UNF Government, the alliance will reaffirm centrist and social democratic policies."

Not a Marxist State: Weerawansa

Asked whether or not the JVP was still a Marxist Party, JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa said the Alliance had been formed based on a common program accepted by both parties and whether they were Marxists or not did not enter into it.

"The JVP's aim is not a Marxist State," he said.
