Politicians should not be allowed to interfere with district secretaries

Sigiriya group correspondent

"District Secretaries are civilian officers. They wage no war - but considered to be the officers of peace who serve the innocent citizens of the country. The poor are the most who need their service" said Minister of Home Affairs, Local Government and Provincial Councils Alick Aluvihare.

The Minister said he did not allow District Secretaries to be immobilised in their official duties on the intervention of the politicians. Officials of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service were the backbone and the lifeblood of the country - who - coordinated every spectrum of state affairs.

District Secretaries were permanent settlers of the administration - but politicians were transitory aliens, he said.

The Minister was addressing the 2nd anniversary of the District Secretaries held at Kandy Secretariat. "District and Provincial Secretaries are required to be in residence of the area where they serve. This applies to Grama Seva Niladaries as well.

"There seem to be some lapses in this issue. I wish they planned to comply with this request at their earliest convenience," the Minister said.

Therefore the Minister requested not to wage war on them. The recent incident where a District Secretary had been brutally treated should not happen in the future, he said.

Twenty three District Secretaries were present at the meeting. The Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, K. W. Karalliadda - Secretary of the Education, Human Resources and Development V. K. Nanayakkara also spoke at the meeting.
