Maximum security to prison officials, prisoners

by Thilak Senanayake

Despite daily threats to life, maximum security will be provided to inmates and detainees in prisons islandwide and to all prison employees including jailors and other prison officials, states Commissioner General of Prisons Rumy Marzook.

Marzook said he received telehone calls threatening his life but Operation Day and Night launched by the Prison Department on January 20 will be alert to assure the safety of all inmates and detainees in prisons and prison staff.

Where exigencies of service demand, police assistance will be sought. An effective program is now operative to avoid conflicts between prison inmates and suspects in prison custody.

When hardcore prisoners are produced in court, with permission from court, special security arrangements are made. When suspects are ordered to be hospitalised, as in the case of Thilanga Sumathipala, the Prison Department provides maximum security, the Prison Commissioner General said.
