by Kalutara group correspondent Time has come for the learned, disciplined and religious Buddhist monks who follow the Buddha's teaching to the letter to come forward in unity to protect Buddhism in Sri Lanka, said Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera the chief incumbent of Singapore Viharaya. He was addressing the Novices (Samanera monks) who were present to receive parcels of books worth Rs. 1,500 each by the Kalutara Bodhi Trust at the Kalutara Bodhi premises recently. There were 460 novices present and the presentation ceremony was headed by ven. Bellana Pemananda Maha Nayake Thera of Amarapura Ariyawansa Saddhamma Ukthika sect. Do not be satisfied with becoming a preacher only, but be ready to work for the society, follow the Dhamma well and be very disciplined monks, Ven. Sobhitha Thera emphasised. Ven. Gonaduwe Gunananda Thera, the President of the Sasanaarakshaka Mandalaya said, this novices' education programme commenced in 1998, seven years ago, only with fifty (50) Samanera's receiving assistance under this scholarship scheme. But today the number has gone up to 460. Therefore the service rendered in this regard by the Kalutara Bodhi Trust should be appreciated by all. they also should thank the organiser for helping the Sunday School children in learning English by their newly set up organisation Bodhi Maga Padanama, that will do a great service to the student population in Kalutara district. He also adviced them to be disciplined and learn Buddhism thoroughly and master the Tri Pitaka. The Chairman of the Kalutara Bodhi Trust N. S. A. Goonetilake said, there is a demand for the Buddha's teaching in foreign countries. Therefore the Novices should endeavour to learn Buddhism thoroughly and join the world mission services to propagate Buddhism all over the world, he added. |
